A home reading nook should provide peace and comfort when you finally immerse yourself in a new book after a long day at work. To arrange it, you will need not only a comfortable armchair but also appropriate lighting. A practical and stylish solution is standing lamps.
Are you just arranging your private relaxation and reading area and wondering what elements to equip it with to make it both impressive and functional? We will help you with this challenge.
What should be in a reading nook?
A home library doesn’t have to be large. What matters is that it has the essential equipment for comfortable reading and uninterrupted relaxation. You will definitely need:
- a comfortable armchair (optionally a footrest),
- a bookshelf, a coffee table, or a cabinet with a drawer (depending on available space),
- spotlighting with a neutral or cool color temperature,
- soft diffuse lighting,
- a leafy potted plant (greatly enhances the atmosphere).
Which lamps should you choose for a reading nook?
The available standing lamps often come with adjustable shades and/or arms, allowing precise direction of the light onto the pages of a book. However, a reading nook should not be illuminated only by spotlights. When it’s completely dark outside, bright spotlighting reflecting off white paper would be highly uncomfortable and straining on the eyes. Therefore, it is worth opting for a combination of a floor lamp + a ceiling lamp, providing soft, diffuse lighting with a warm color temperature. The power of the bulb is also important. In a standing lamp, use a 40W or 5W LED bulb. For a reading nook, it is advisable to choose LED standing lamps, which are energy-efficient and gentle on the eyes.
Where to place the standing lamp?
There should be about 30-40 cm of free space between the light source and the book you are holding. A standing lamp is usually placed beside the armchair, just behind the backrest, so that the bulb’s light does not glare on you while sitting.
How to match the lamp to the interior style?
Due to their considerable size, standing lamps are an attention-grabbing decorative element, so the chosen model should fit well with the overall arrangement. The Scandinavian style is most strongly associated with a relaxing atmosphere. Standing lamps that harmonize well with it should have a wooden base, such as a tripod, and a large, light pastel shade. In traditionally decorated interiors, lamps with a classic shade and wooden elements look good. In loft and industrial settings, metal lamps with shades on a movable arm in gray, black, silver, or copper, or raw constructions without shades work excellently. For minimalists, we recommend simple and functional solid-colored standing lamps with adjustable shades, while for glamour style enthusiasts – models that are shiny and sophisticated, preferably decorated with crystals.
How to choose a standing lamp for the area of the nook?
It is a misconception that standing lamps can only illuminate large rooms. For a small reading nook, choose a model that is simple, slender, delicate, with a narrow leg and a small shade or with an exposed bulb – one that doesn’t visually diminish the space. We are confident that you will find the perfect lamp.
