Washer-dryers have gained a wide following in recent years. They provide a convenient solution, especially since not everyone has the option to dry their laundry outdoors, or even on a balcony. Moreover, most of the year is limited by the prevailing weather conditions. What are the advantages and potential disadvantages of washer-dryers? Is it worth equipping a home with a traditional dryer while having this appliance?
What are the advantages of washer-dryers?
The success of washer-dryers is, of course, determined by the versatility of this appliance and the comfort it brings. Using the drying function means you don’t have to worry about hanging laundry, and in a smaller apartment, you can save space that a traditional dryer would occupy. With a partial load, the washing and drying process is combined – at the end, you take out dry clothes and fabrics from the washer-dryer. Most washer-dryers are modern appliances that can be controlled, for instance, via a smartphone. These devices will likely become a permanent fixture in our homes.
What are the drawbacks of a washer with a drying function?
At the same time, washer-dryers have some drawbacks. One of them is the aforementioned partial load. If you decide to do a wash weighing 8 kg and want to use the drying option, you have to remove almost half of the drum’s contents before starting. Some clothing therefore requires hanging up, or a wait of several hours for its turn. It’s worth mentioning that the entire washing and drying cycle lasts around 5 hours, depending on the model. Most devices available on the market do not use modern heat pumps, but rather heating elements that heat fabrics to even 80 degrees Celsius. This is not beneficial for every type of material. Additionally, clothes coming out of the washer remain wrinkled and creased. The relatively high costs of drying laundry this way are also significant.
Why are traditional dryers still useful?
It’s worth equipping a household with a convenient washer-dryer; however, modern models are not a perfect solution. At least part of the laundry is definitely better off being dried the traditional way. For limited spaces, compact-sized dryers or vertical models that allow drying fabrics on multiple levels will work well.
